Fantastic Adventures: Ruins of the Grendleroot for 5e
Publisher: SlyFlourish
by Chad S. [Verified Purchaser]
Date Added: 10/07/2021 23:53:32

Short Version: This was great.

I’ve been DMing a fairly long time, but I generally don’t use published adventures. I’ve really enjoyed Sly Flourish’s advice books, so I thought I’d give this a try. We just finished the last part of the main storyline and all the players told me how much they’ve enjoyed it.

We played almost weekly, for three to four hours at a shot. Playing through all the adventures lasted us nearly six months. We averaged two sessions an adventure, but your mileage may vary.

Everything is designed around a four character party. I typically had five or six. This wasn’t much of an issue. All I had to do was drop in an extra opponent here and there and things worked out nicely. Some encounters also have notes for scaling up important encounters for larger parties.

Honestly, I think I only even used about 3/4 of the content here. There are location and encounter generators that would easily add additional content if you felt your group needed more. There are also guidelines for continuing the plot into higher tiers of play if you want to continue beyond the presented storyline.

The only thing I can think of as a downside I’m almost embarrassed to bring up. A few of the VTT maps are scaled for 10’ squares instead of 5’. I didn’t catch it the first time, but I was on the lookout for it going forward. I can hardly complain about it, since I’m pretty sure the map pack was provided for free after I purchased the adventure. How can I complain about high-quality free stuff?

As someone who is kind of biased against published adventures, I can say this was a five-star experience for me.

Blades & Blasters 5E: Bestiary & Rulebook
Publisher: Seth Tomlinson

There's a lot to like here. The writing is solid. The art is very good throughout. I liked how the lore and worldbuilding were handled. If you're thinking about a more space opera style game or an "otherworld invasion" scenario, this is a good choice.

The only thing I'd caution is that the weaponry is pretty deadly, but that's not really a surprise. Being careful about the availability of energy cells would easily keep a lid on that if you didn't want it to be a big part of your game.

There are already detailed reviews here, but let me just add that I was stunned by how much was actually in this. If you like to do any amount of homebrew content, this is a must-have.

This is very well done. There's a lot to work with here and a well thought-out villainous organization. Fits perfectly with SotDL, of course, but I can almost guarantee I'll be using this in D&D, too. It would even make a good villain group for a supers game, if you're playing something along the lines of Hellboy.

Superluminary is an excellent companion to Other Worlds. This would save a ton of time for a space opera game. I think it would be pretty easy to reskin it for a heroic fantasy game as well. Even if you're not planning on playing in these generes, I'd still recommend it as an excellent example of how to fully implement the ideas in the core game.

I'll be honest, I'm not really good at writing reviews, but I had to say something about this one. I got this as part of a charity bundle and knew nothing about it. I was blown away at how much is packed in here and how well it's done. It's listed as system neutral / OSR, but I can't see any reason I couldn't run it with any of my go-to game systems.

No, the title and artwork aren't family friendly. Once you get past that, it's all good stuff. I've been a game master a little over 25 years and I wish I could have given a copy of this to Much Younger Me.

Do you want to make cool maps that look like you drew them yourself? Would you like it to be about as easy as playing with Legos? This is the product for you. The recommendation is to use GIMP, but I got pretty good results in MapTool (turned off "Snap to Grid" and just laid things in the Background free-hand). This is worth every penny and then some.

Another very solid entry for Cortex Heroic Fantasy games. I was very happy with the selection of backgrounds and classes, along with the guidelines for making your own. I wasn't originally drawn to ships or mass combat, but they were very well done and got me thinking about how to incorporate them in my own game.

Fantasy Roleplaying: An Omnibus of Opponents
Publisher: Blackwing Productions
by Chad S. [Verified Purchaser]

This is very well done and useful for two big reasons. First, it's a nice collection of the standards for a fantasy game. Cortex Plus really hasn't had that up to now, apart from the ones in the Hacker's Guide. Second, I saw a number of examples of the book that showed me good ways to replicate powers or abilities in making my own creatures.

Generic sourcebooks can be very hit-or-miss, but this is very well done. It covers a variety of useful topics on character archetypes, missions, organizational structure and goals, and even considerations on magic. This advice would be applicable to any fantasy espionage game. If you substitute technology for the magical conceits, it would even helpful for modern settings.

Tales from the Ninth World

I'm a little torn on this. The stories were very good, but it just doesn't seem like there was enough. I'm on the fence about the value, even though it was only $2.99 to begin with.

Also, I wouldn't recommend letting the rpg preview content be your deciding factor in buying. It's really just the first few pages of the intro chapter in final layout form. If you've been following Numenera's development, you won't see much new.

Other Worlds
Publisher: Signal 13
by Chad S. [Verified Purchaser]
Date Added: 07/01/2012 14:34:32

This is the game I've been looking for. Other Worlds is a very adaptable and cinematic system. The focus is on making interesting stories that make sense. Conflict resolution is very elegant and shows you how to keep the story moving forward win or lose. Character generation is extremely customizable and ensures your characters are tied to the setting and the story right away.

I'll be honest, I was a little hesitant with this game at first. Most of my experience has been with more crunchy games. The same for my players. But we've played this several times now and my group is still eager for more.

The only thing I'd throw out as a caution is the little bit of front-end work that needs to be done when you set up characters or a new campaign. In fairness, I took a lot of this on myself as the GM. The book recommends doing some collaborative world building and I should have listened. It's not at all hard, but many hands make light work. I can only see that making my results even better next time.

This could be one of the best deals in pdf and worth every penny.

Marvel Heroic Roleplaying: Basic Game

This is an excellent story-telling game for replicating the feel and pacing of a comic book. But let's be clear, that's what it is. If you're looking for the next M&M or HERO, this isn't what you're after. This game is geared toward making the characters and the story feel right. There's no points to track and not much in the way of nuts-and-bolts. But for making the game feel like the comics, I think its ideal.

Eureka: 501 Adventure Plots to Inspire Game Masters

Other reviewers have gone into detail about what the book covers, so consider this more of a testimonial.

This is a book that any GM should have. Period. It has gotten me past GM's writer's block. It has helped me finish half-formed ideas for story arcs.

The fact that it's available in pdf makes it even better. While the indexes are impressive (to say the least), the ability to search for a keyword like "horror" or "space opera" and flip immediately to those entries is a huge value.
