An excellently rendered campaign world for D&D 3.5, combining traditional D&D tropes with steampunk and pulp adventure elements. Bet it'd be a lot of fun to play in! (Originally posted on Goodreads)

Familiarity

I have been running Eberron since 2006. The first long-term campaign I ever ran was in this setting. I have run three long-term Eberron campaigns, including one now, and dozens of one-shots, across six different systems (D&D/Pathfinder, Iron Kingdoms RPG, HERO, FATE, Genesys, and most recently Savage Worlds).

Good Points

  • Versatile setting that creates a lot of interesting plot hooks for GMs to work with, but knows when to leave blank space for homebrew content.
  • Unique aesthetic that evokes a high fantasy version of post-WWI Europe.
  • Inclusive design ethos; if it exists in D&D it has a place in Eberron!
  • There are no "evil races". Orcs and goblins have their own history and culture within the setting, and are not
  • The players are set up to fully be the stars of the show, as they should be. There isn't a stable of high-level heroes who will pop up constantly and steal the spotlight.

Bad Points

  • D&D 3.5 is largely defunct at this point, so stats in this book would need to be converted for most campaigns. If you play D&D 5e, there are newer resources (Eberron: Rising from the Last War being the most official). If you play a non-D&D system, you were going to have to convert anyway.
  • The setting has developed a lot in the sixteen years between its original publication and me writing this review, and this book captures none of that.

Variable Points (Will vary a lot based on personal taste and group)

  • The canonical lack of mundane scientific development feels super weird to me. It's a way to justify high fantasy weapons and armor
  • Eberron breaks from many of the traditions of high fantasy D&D settings. To me, this was a fantastic change of pace, but it could rub some GMs and players the wrong way.
  • This edition's setting book has a more black-and-white view of some things (especially the Blood of Vol) that has softened in the years since. I prefer the newer versions (minus wandslingers), but some people might prefer the simpler, older version.

Conclusion

Of all of the published medieval fantasy settings I've encountered, Eberron is by far my favorite. It strikes the perfect balance between pulp and noir, with just a splash of cosmic horror. Highly recommend.

I had the dead tree version of this Campaign Setting, and I bought it again nearly twelve years later. The Eberron Campaign Setting book presents a fresh, new take on adventuring in D&D, presenting a world that is every bit as evocative as the Forgotten Realms. Eberron surprisingly, has depth and breadth in one book, and later expansions brought the world to light. It is unfortunate that the world, however, suffered from a marketing blitz. This causes the world to be forgotten very soon despite how good and fresh it is. Eberron deserves much more than the blitz it got during it's short life.

PRODUCTION VALUE The Graphic Design of this product sets a new standard for new books, and this is followed up with it's expansions. The layout is wonderful and each page or two has a graphic. This was Wizards of the Coast's RPG R&D at it's hieght, and the Graphic Design shows. Every artist that worked on the Eberron Campaign Setting made the campaign setting come to life for so many people that bought the book. The book is in full color and the art ranges from cartoonish to beautiful. The book is gridded wonderfully, and it is easy to find the information you need without bookmarks. But the book is bookmarked, thank goodness.

Good:

  • Asthetics, awesome artwork.
  • Information/text is very clear to read and it's very well set out.

Bad:

  • Artwork was not rendered down ('flattened') into background images - the PDF is filled with extensive, seperate images which, for the few pages either side of the current page, need to be re-rendered every time you move from one page to the next. This slows the application down dramaticlally.
  • Difficult to quickly move from one part of the document to the other (even from one page to the next) making it very difficult to use in-game - Big dissapointment.

This is without doubt the best campaign setting for d and d. It is a fresh and different now as it was when released, and now I'm pdf. We played eberron with 4e and that was pretty good, but the depth in 3.5 is so much better. With minimum work you can use it all with 5e, which is proving popular with all but our most for hard 4e player.

The best campaign setting of dungeons and dragons (for me) available as a pdf! This setting has unique great aspects, as diplomatic rivalry, economic powerhouses challenging the might of nations, those seeking freedom from totalitarian lands ruled by beings from the land of dreams, transnational jurisdiction of houses with dragonmarked powers, universities vying for power and knowledge, intrigue in operra houses, transportation means as trains and airships, the legacy of a cruel and protracted war, uncertainty about the gods, monotheism, politheist and philosophical approaches to religion, influence of the planes on the land... You name it! I hope it is supported in dndnext and not just the Forgotten Realms, given the special, fun, intrigujng and unique elements of this setting, created by a very friendly guy, Keith Baker, with really fun ideas.

Reasonable scan and comprehensively bookmarked. I'm finding it very easy to read. It's good to see WotC embracing the watermarked PDF format.
