DDAL07-08 Putting the Dead to Rest (5e)

Putting the Dead to Rest is a simple, but colorful Tier 2 mod. The mod is a 2 hr travel, investigate, fight the boss sort of mod. Its charm lies primarily in the interesting context: the architecture, and battle map layout, which provides additional challenges to the PC's to manage to fight. It forces a bit of tactical positioning.

Overall, I liked the mod, though my criticism of the mod is usual for short AL missions: the villains are pretty straightforward, single dimensional mcguffins. I would like to be more reason to care about vanquishing the 'evil-doers'.

The story here mostly sets up the Mod that follows this series. The encounters are mostly just speed bumps to nudge the PC's a little on their quest. There is really little story reason why the antagonists should be involved at all.

I really did not enjoy running this mod.

The puzzles/traps are really unclear. The solutions to the puzzles make no sense. The traps can largely be bypassed with trial and error. Once one person makes it through by trial and error, the rest of the party can safely cross.

This mod requires some heavy DM to address these issues. The puzzle can be more logical, and trial and error experimentation should be dissuaded.

Investigation adventurers tend to be really fun to play. They allow a lot of NPC interaction, which encourages RP. The combat tends to be on the simplistic side, even though low level T2's may suffer.

The NPC's are richly desribed and fun for the DM to portray.

I do enjoy this dungeon crawl mod.

The boss at the end is a fantastic design. Powerful and challenging for PC's, while not constructed of absurdly impenetrable defenses (AKA the Beast of Talos). The dungeon has character, and it is woefully difficult to predict when fights will occur.

Some of the traps are quite predictable, but the I think there are sufficient traps to keep the PC's on their toes.

Ultimately, while the story is simple, and straightforward, the real feature of this mod is the well designed boss, and the surprise upon which the boss is sprung on the PC's.

Some thoughts:

(1) Traps are a bad mechanic. They are boring for a DM, since they are so mechanical. Traps are fun in moderation. Building an entire mod based around traps is a bad idea.

(2) Puzzles are fun... in moderation. Again, puzzles drain RP potential out of a mod. Solving puzzles tends to be a meta activity.

(3) [slight spoiler alert] I like that there are re-occuring characters in this mod (i.e. characters that persist beyond the mod). Villains in AL rarely outlast the mod, so this is a refreshing change.

Combat: 8/10 The encounters in this mod were fun, but they are single dimensional in their character. There are essentially a lot of martial class fights, so the difficulty of the fights depends on whether the PC group has spellcasters or not. Spellcasters make the fight almost laughably easy. However, I did have a PC say: "I liked to be frightened, and DM, you certainly frightened me," which is very encouraging. This surprised me, because there wasn't a particular boss that was downright threatening.

Plot: 8/10 The story is great. There was a ever-present notion to the PC's that something wasn't quite right, and something wasn't so straightforward. So there was an element of mystery into figuring out what was going on, and how to use that to their advantage. It's funny how each time I DM this mod, the PC's interpret the events differently, and their approach to the ending is varies heavily.

The PC's are also quite invested in the outcome, since they could be stopping a major war between Giants and small folk, and there is the personal desire to help the mother.

Overall, a great mod, and really fun to both run and play.

This was a very fun mod, and I don't think the PC's have ever been as scared of a single monster as the one Hartkiller's Horn is reputed to have. It's enjoyable and challenging for the PC's.

My only gripe about the beast (because let's face it, that's what this mod is mostly about) is that it is practically bulletproof. There are no weaknesses to exploit. It's almost frustrating how resilient the beast is.

I enjoyed running this mod, though many of the times that I ran it, I felt that the PC's were grasping for clues. The desire to solve the mystery kept the PC's motivated to get through the mod. I liked how the ending is somber, but at the same time, it's as if the PC's didn't have a whole lot of say in the outcome of the adventure.

Encounters: 5/10 A lot of these encounters are simply too easy. Many of the encounters are against bags of HP as far as Tier 3 goes, and these opponents are easily disabled by spellcasters. There are few ways for these encounters to challenge the PC's if they have decent saves.

The boss fight is interesting since its a monster you don't see very often (except in a certain hardcover), so in the end its modestly fun.

Plot: 7/10 You do care about the story/hook, since it's a major NPC friend that you're trying to rescue. Outside of that, there isn't much mystery or politics in the story, so it tends to be uninteresting.

[Spoilers] Encounters Rating: 8/10 The encounters in this mod are fun. If there is an OotG in the party, the "boss" fight is challenging. There is a lack of support goons for the boss, so the difficulty of the encounter depends very much on the skill of the DM. The guidance for the "boss" is probably not helpful.

The other fights involve rather fun, challenging, and unique creatures to deal with. The only issue is that with some of the encounters (the ones against humanoids), there is really lack of diversity amongst the opponents, so they are quite easily overcome with a good spellcaster amongst the PC's.

Plot: 5/10 There really isn't much mystery or motivation provided for the adventurer's to care about this issue. The story isn't particularly interesting, and doesn't seem very consequential to the overall theme of Season 5 mods.

Other Notes: A really straightforward mod. Easy to run.
