Hamlet On A Page 08: Crestwoode

This seventh installment of Hamlet On A Page focuses on Crestwoode, an isolates but frequently traveled village of magic, enlightenment, wealth, and splendor.

The following is a portion of the text from the village description:

Nestled in the remote woodlands of a hilly borderland region is the gleaming, mystical jewel that is known as the village of Crestwoode. Abundant with the elements of prosperity, enlightenment, and magic, Crestwoode offers a curious, delightful contrast to its immediate surroundings of isolated, sparsely inhabited wilderness. Despite being a bit off the beaten path, merchants and travelers frequent the village in order to enjoy the community's profitable offerings, intriguing inhabitants, and enchanted splendor.

Though technically the border region of an existing feudal nation, the land that Crestwoode rests upon was overgrown and uninhabited until around thirty harvests ago. Tired with constant traveling, the great mage Malitekus Magorus decided that he wanted to settle upon the edges of his home country. Gaining support and approval from the ruling nobles, Malitekus selected a spot to call home and quickly cleared the surroundings from the presence of dangerous beasts, monstrosities, and ill willed bandits. From these beginnings the community of Crestwoode quickly grew into a prosperous village.

Heavily populated by the likes of wizards, adventurers, scholars, renowned craftsmen, prized professionals, and eager young apprentices, Crestwoode is a curious place for one to visit. Though quite a few of the inhabitants engage in the simple, unimpressive labors, hardly a soul within the village complains of being impoverished or doing without. Safety is another topic of least concern, despite the fact that such a wealthy village lacks the deterrent of fortified walls. When once asked about the absence of such protections, High Mage and Village Elder Malitekus Margorus merely laughed and advised that the only threats that would challenge him or the village would be quite capable of "walking through walls and flying over fortifications". With two colleges of study, one for wizards and a smaller one for bards, as well as numerous craftsmen and professionals willing to take on apprentices and simple laborers, Crestwoode is the perfect place for someone seeking the chance of proving their selves worthy of a better life.

On one convenient page you get the map of small fantasy village along with a key showing what each numbered location is (such as baker, blacksmith, etc.) Next to the description each numbered location on the key you will find the population of villagers living at the location.

In addition to the map and key, you will find a brief write up about the hamlet/village. And of course, the hamlet/village also comes with a pre-determined name but you can always change that to something else if you desire.

Really pleased so far with Fishwife Games. The maps are clean and easy to follow. There are a lot of cool descriptions too. Very playable stuff and a great value for all the information you get. [...]

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.
Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
